The corner of Calle de Los Suspiros and Calle de San Pedro, in the historical quarter of Coloñia del Sacramento, Uruguay. The lighthouse (El Faro) can be seen in the background. The Calle de Los Suspiros (Street of Sighs) is one of the most picturesque and photographed streets in the historical quarter of Coloñia del Sacramento, Uruguay. I've come across several stories regarding the origin of the name. One story is that prostitutes worked in the street's buildings and it was named for the sounds that could be heard in the street. Another is that it was because of the sound that slaves made as they were led down to the river. And another that it was named for the sound of the wind blowing from the river. This photo was taken using a tripod mounted camera and is a good example of the technique of using a slow shutter speed in low light. Coloñia is a port town on Uruguay?s south coast on the Río de la Plata (River Plate) situated on the opposite side to Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. It was founded in 1680 by the Portugese and is the oldest town in Uruguay. The historical zone (Barrio Histórico) of Coloñia (full name Coloñia del Sacramento) is a UNESCO world heritage site and a popular tourist destination with Argentines, easily accessible from Buenos Aires by ferry.

A portrait of a young woman taken at night in the Calle de Los Susprios in Coloñia del Sacramento, Uruguay. The photo is a good example of this technique, the camera was mounted on a tripod and a slow shutter speed (one second) used to capture the balance of ambient and artificial light, together with a high ISO of 1600 to prevent the shutter speed from being too slow.
